A builder was sentenced to prison after stealing £700,000 from a resident and gambling it away in casinos.

Sole director of Myint Construction Ltd has been sentenced to four years in jail and banned from being a company director for eight years.

He defrauded a resident of £700,000 during a home refurbishment by using fake references, issuing false invoices, and misleading about completed work.

Lee who gambled away the money in casinos, received a guilty verdict after a three-week trial.

It is truly disheartening to hear about incidents like this where a builder takes advantage of a resident's trust and commits fraud. In this case, the sole director of Myint Construction Ltd has not only betrayed the confidence placed in him but has also caused immense financial harm to the resident. It is no wonder that such actions have serious consequences.

The fact that the builder used fake references, issued false invoices, and misled about completed work shows a high level of planning and deceptiveness. This is a clear indication of premeditated fraud, which is an extremely serious offense.

The resident who fell victim to this fraudulent scheme must have been devastated upon realizing the extent of the deception. Home refurbishments can be costly, and for someone to exploit this situation for personal gain is both morally and ethically wrong.

It is troubling to learn that the builder chose to gamble away the entirety of the stolen money in casinos. This demonstrates a lack of responsibility and suggests that the individual had serious issues with gambling addiction. Gambling addiction can have severe consequences, not only on the gambler themselves but also on those around them. It is unfortunate that the builder's addiction led them to squander the funds they unjustly obtained.

The guilty verdict and subsequent four-year prison sentence are fitting punishments for the builder's actions. Taking into account the amount of money stolen and the damage caused to the victim, a lengthy prison term serves as a deterrent for others who might consider committing similar crimes. Additionally, the ban from being a company director for eight years prevents the individual from assuming a position of authority where they could deceitfully exploit others in the future.

Cases like these are reminders for individuals to exercise caution and carry out thorough due diligence when hiring contractors. It is important to verify references, check credentials, and be vigilant throughout any home improvement project.
