A poker player who claimed to have cancer in order to participate in a World Series of Poker event lied and collected thousands in contributions.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, an individual residing in California has confessed to fabricating the false claim of having an incurable form of cancer in order to obtain substantial monetary contributions for participation in a prestigious World Series of Poker event. Robert Mercer, a 37-year-old inhabitant of Vallejo, managed to manipulate sympathetic individuals into donating generous amounts through his GoFundMe campaign, purportedly to cover the expenses associated with entering the highly anticipated Las Vegas tournament.
