Are Red/Black bets a waste of time?

I've been sticking with even-money outside bets like Red/Black for a while now, but I wonder if there are better ways to play. The payout is only even-money so in the long run, the House edge seems high. What are your thoughts on only betting Red/Black? Do you think they're a waste of time or a decent low-risk way to play for beginners? I'd love to hear some alternatives if you have any.
