Legislators in New Jersey mandated that gambling would benefit not only the beach region but the entire state when they legalized casinos in Atlantic City more than 40 years ago. Prior to the first Boardwalk casino opening two years later, the state established the Casino Revenue Fund in 1976.
Gaming taxes paid in Atlantic City and online are directed to the Casino Revenue fund. The fund also receives parking and lodging charges from casinos, forfeited winnings from casinos and sportsbooks, administrative penalties, and a special tax on progressive slot jackpots.
