As a veteran cash game grinder, I prefer lighter bankrolls for cash games. Too big a roll means I’m playing tighter, trying to preserve my stack. In limit games especially, a bigger roll just means I’m calling bets with marginal hands more often.
Tourneys though, that’s where a healthy bankroll really matters. You need enough to survive the initial levels without going all-in with garbage. Once the blinds get big, one bad beat can bust you quick if you’re underrolled. For me, I like to keep enough on the sidelines for cash games to play semi-aggressively, but put aside a separate tourney bankroll. What’s the point of entering a tournament if you can’t afford to play it smoothly? That’s my view, even if it means I can’t back as many hands as the kids with mega-rolls. Poker’s about managing your money, not blowing it!
