In December of last year, Shaws the Drapers, located at 6-7 Castle Square, faced financial troubles and had to close down 28 stores across England and Wales, including Haverfordwest and Carmarthen.
At the beginning of this year, Done Brothers (Cash Betting) Ltd applied to the county planners to repurpose the vacant Shaws site into a Betfred betting shop. According to Agent ID Planning, Betfred is known as "the largest privately-owned betting company in the world and one of the UK's largest privately-owned retail stores."
If the application is approved, the current Betfred shop on High Street would become empty and available for lease as a retail or commercial space, as per the applicants. ID Planning reported that despite nine months of marketing efforts, no viable retail or alternative business has shown interest in occupying the Shaws property.
