Betting for pot control on the flop

When taking part in betting rounds soon after the three community cards are dealt, placing bets to control the size of the pot can be a wise move. By wagering an amount that is relatively small compared to the total pot at that point, you attempt to limit how much money opponents can win if one of them has a strong hand already. This tactic is called "betting for pot control on the flop." Keeping the sums at stake lower in earlier betting rounds preserves more of your stack for when you do pick up a favourable hand later in the hand. Some situational awareness is needed, however, to avoid giving away too much information to opponents.
