Brazil football teams want a say on sport betting taxes

Brazil's Finance Minister, Fernando Haddad, has revealed a plan to implement a tax on sports betting providers as a possible preliminary to complete acceptance of the industry. The initiative led to a demand for the operators to join in a discussion on the idea. Several soccer teams are now interested in joining. Eight of the top football teams in Brazil have officially asked the federal government to give them a chance to comment on the rules and regulations for online betting. A list of notable clubs requesting for advice includes Corinthians FC, Flamengo FC, Palmeiras, and Sao Paulo FC. Because the government is unable to control the platforms, bookmakers that support the top 20 teams in Brazil do business from other countries.

This attempt of federal government to introduce taxes on sport betting providers is too early to be implemented. Since the country is just testing the water on sports betting, the government should have allowed the system to run for some time before attempting to impose taxes in the industry.
