Brazil minister bans betting on social welfare

An injunction prohibiting betting through Brazil's Bolsa Familia social welfare check has been filed by a minister. Today, the Brazilian chamber of deputies will hold an emergency session to discuss the measure, which is expected to go into effect right away.

In recent months, politicians and other private sectors have strongly criticized Brazil's betting industry, which is getting ready to get its first licenses soon. 20% of funds submitted through Brazil's Bolsa Familia welfare program in August were used for online gambling, according to a study released by the Central Bank in September.

The move to prohibit betting using Brazil's Bolsa Familia social welfare funds is a crucial step to protect vulnerable populations from financial harm. With 20% of these funds reportedly spent on online gambling in August, the measure aims to ensure that welfare benefits are used for essential needs. The Brazilian chamber of deputies’ emergency session highlights the urgency of addressing this issue as the country prepares to regulate its betting industry. Striking a balance between industry growth and social responsibility will be key as Brazil issues its first licenses.
