Bulgarian media companies protest against proposed gambling advertising ban

Concerning the possible effects on media revenue streams and journalistic freedom, Bulgarian media companies have voiced their opposition to a proposed ban on gambling advertising. Claiming that certain parties would take advantage of the situation to manipulate the media ahead of the next elections, they attacked the government for being too blind.

The new bill forbids advertisements for gambling on any media, including radio, television, newspapers, and internet websites. While outdoor advertising would still be allowed in certain areas, stakeholders in the media industry have criticized the proposed ban, arguing that it stifles free speech rather than protecting consumers.
