Caesars Entertainment reaches out to patrons about cyberattack

Many Caesars Rewards members received an email from Caesars Entertainment on Friday informing them of the cyberattack that the casino company was subjected to in September. As a result, the company had to pay a sizable bounty to protect its operating systems.

According to company representatives, the ransom payment kept the company's operating systems secure and was made in exchange for the hackers' promise that the stolen data wouldn't be sold or distributed on the dark web. Caesars' representatives acknowledged that there is no foolproof way to stop the improper distribution of the stolen files and documents.

It is a complicated matter because, as representatives of Caesars have emphasized, there is no foolproof approach to guarantee that stolen information will not be unlawfully disseminated or sold on the dark internet, even after a ransom has been paid. Companies frequently encounter challenging decisions in such scenarios, weighing the necessity to protect data against the potential risks and consequences of negotiating with cybercriminals.
