California tribe casinos quick to chide new sports betting proposals

Other tribal gaming operators in the state swiftly criticized two sports wagering proposals that surfaced in California on Friday after representatives of an unidentified Native American tribe filed a filing with the state attorney general's office.

In the California midterm elections of 2022, two ballot initiatives pertaining to sports betting—one backed by commercial gaming firms and the other by tribes—were soundly defeated.

Boyd Gaming, which was purchased for $170 million in cash last November, and the Friday filing's underlying speculation led to rumors that the operator of a casino in Las Vegas might have been involved as well.
