It does not appear that gambling addiction can directly lead to schizophrenia. However, some studies suggest that there may be a higher prevalence of problem and pathological gambling among individuals with schizophrenia compared to the general population. Additionally, it is noted that substance abuse can act as an environmental trigger for individuals with existing genetic risk factors for schizophrenia. Therefore, while gambling addiction itself may not lead to schizophrenia, it can be a co-occurring factor in individuals who have a genetic risk for schizophrenia and may be more vulnerable to environmental triggers, such as substance abuse
