In blackjack, "surrender" allows you to forfeit your hand and lose only half your bet instead of playing the hand to completion. This option is available in some games, usually before you take any other action. There are two types: early surrender, where you can surrender before the dealer checks for blackjack, and late surrender, where it’s only allowed if the dealer does not have a natural blackjack.
Surrender is used in situations where the odds of winning are very low. For example, in late surrender, basic strategy recommends surrendering a hard 16 (not a pair of 8s) against a dealer’s 9, 10, or Ace, or sometimes a hard 15 against a dealer’s 10. By surrendering in these unfavorable spots, you minimize losses over time.
