Pair of 8s or 7s are good candidates for splitting. Though the individual cards are moderate,when split and hit appropriately, you can often make two strong hands. For example, if you split two 8s and receive one 9 and one 10 as hit cards, you would then have 18 and 20 as your totals for a strong chance of winning both hands. Often paired lower to moderate cards perform well when split compared to high cards like aces which have a lower chance of improving significantly after splitting. Therefore, I recommend splitting pairs from 7 to 10 first, then consider splitting pairs from 4 to 6 depending on the dealer's upcard.
