Chile betting ban results in less sponsors for football teams

The highest court in Chile, the Supreme Court, ruled this week that practically all sports betting businesses functioning there are doing so illegally. since expected, the decision is having an effect on Chilean sports, particularly its soccer sector, since teams are breaking their sponsorship arrangements with the bookmakers.

Notably, Betsson and Betway are probably going to be the most negatively impacted by the choice. Betway served as the major sponsor of a select number of regional teams, and Betsson paid a hefty sum to participate in Chilean soccer. Now both operators are out of commission.

It's unfortunate that the betting ban is affecting football club sponsorships. Sports need funding to operate, so this ruling puts teams in a difficult position. Hopefully they can find new sponsors to fill the void left by the betting companies exiting Chile. fan support and community partners may need to step up temporarily.
