Concerns raised over loot box self-regulation in the UK

Following the revelation by a regulatory expert that more than 90% of the advertisements he examined violated the industry's own self-regulation code, the UK government declared that further action was required to safeguard adults and children from loot boxes.

In video games, loot boxes let players purchase packages that hold random items like character outfits or weaponry. Although the video game industry contests that the mechanism can be classified as gambling, a number of nations have taken action to outlaw the sale of loot boxes to minors and regulate them as gambling products.
