Do casinos have to give away winning jackpots immediately even if no one claims them?

They've advertised a big jackpot for weeks now. I headed down to my local casino, hoping my luck would turn around tonight. But when I checked the slots, the jackpot meter read over 10 million. Where was everybody? According to the attendants, the jackpot has rolled over 12 times already with no winner.

Initially casinos have to pay out a minimum percentage of winnings, but after several rollovers, they're allowed to keep the loot if it goes unclaimed. Schucks, seems I missed out on my chance at a new life of luxury! The casino knows the allure of those huge jackpots will draw more suckers like me in. They may let it roll for another dozen times before actually having to cut a check. What's a gambler to do?
