Some high stakes players'll take 'em study drugs and no-oters to boost their cognition, but it ain't exactly cheating. At least not in the legal or ethical sense, though opinion on that certainly varies at the tables.
Them drugs, like Adderall, Ritalin or modafinil, ain't really "performance enhancers" like 'roids in sports. They just help some players feel sharper, think faster, and stay focused longer. Can that give a player an edge? Maybe a slight one, in certain situations. But an elite player don't need no pill to outthink the competition.
A player's skill, experience, psychological game, and reads are far more important than any single-dose amphetamine. And plenty of pros choose not to take nothin' - refusing to give any substance even the hint of an advantage.
If it ain't an unfair physical transformation and just helps a mind stay sharp, then limited use of study drugs by some pros could be seen as akin to a strong cup of coffee, rather than outright cheating. But mods and overseers do monitor for abuse, and bans happen sometimes too. At the end of the day though, a player's talent and strategy matter most. Pills alone won't get you to no final table.
