Do you have any tips for when to use the surrender option?

The surrender option gives players the chance to immediately walk away from a losing hand and retrieve a small proportion of their bet, rather than playing out the hand and likely losing more. However, I'm unsure of the best times to actually use this option - does anyone have any rules of thumb for when surrendering makes the most sense? I usually only surrender hands when I think I have less than a 20% chance of winning, but I'm sure there are more strategic approaches I could take to maximize this option. Any advice would be appreciated!
