Does the house edge benefit the casino owner or the player?

Don't automatically assume that the house edge is on your side. It's advantageous to the house. To have a chance of making money, you must be wise and choose wisely. For instance, one of the greatest ways to achieve this is to focus on single-zero roulette whenever possible.
The low house edge does not guarantee that the dealer will receive a natural blackjack hand, your number will come up on the roulette wheel, or the jackpot will be won on your subsequent play of the slot machine. The house advantage has no bearing on any particular wager. It is only relevant for sustained game play.
