Eight-or-better" is a term used in certain types of poker games that involve both high hands and low hands. In these games, the pot is split between the player with the highest-ranking hand and the player with the lowest-ranking hand, but only if that hand meets a certain qualification criteria - that the low hand must be "eight or better," meaning it must have five cards with a rank of eight or lower. The most commonly played games that use the "eight-or-better" rule are Omaha Hi-Lo and Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo , although it can also be found in other games. So, in poker, "eight-or-better" describes a requirement for a qualifying low hand in certain games

The five lowest unpaired cards in a player's hand must have a combined value of eight or less in order for them to qualify for the low half of the pot. When constructing a low hand, aces are regarded as low.
