The Swedish National Audit Office, Riksrevisionen, has officially initiated an examination of Spelinspektionen to evaluate the efficacy of the regulator's authority over the nation's gambling industry. In November 2022, the market experienced a significant transformation following the instruction from the Riksdag, the highest decision-making body in the country, mandating all B2B gambling enterprises to acquire a license from Spelinspektionen by 1 July 2023 in order to operate.
As a result, the number of companies under the supervision of the Swedish regulator has grown, presently totaling about 600 license and permit holders. Concurrently, in an effort to cultivate a healthier and safer gambling environment, a series of measures were implemented by the Riksdag in May of this year.
Riksrevisionen emphasized the necessity for all operators in the country to possess a license when the Swedish gambling market was restructured in 2019, aiming to "reestablish control over the gambling market, enhance channelization, and safeguard Swedish consumers."
