Former Australian MP jailed for gambling with taxpayers money

After using his position to gamble with public funds, a former Australian Member of Parliament received a prison sentence. Despite the former politician's ongoing mental health issues, the court sentenced him to 21 months in prison.

He was permitted to pay for expenses with public funds as an independent. Unfortunately, the 57-year-old man wasted his money on gambling because he was unable to resist the temptation that having such money offered.

After the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission conducted an investigation, the defendant was initially charged with this crime in September. The man admitted guilt to two counts of misconduct in public office a year later.
