GamCare set to stop Safer Gambling scheme

By the end of this year, GamCare plans to shut down its Safer Gambling initiative.

"Independent quality standard that assesses the measures gambling businesses have put in place to protect people from experiencing gambling-related harm," according to the Safer Gambling Standard's website.

GamCare introduced this standard in 2019, but the GamCare Board decided in December 2023 that the Safer Gambling Standard would continue to operate under a new framework.

GamCare recently announced it will be restructuring its Safer Gambling Standard, an initiative originally designed to provide a certification for businesses meeting specific player protection criteria. This decision, made by GamCare's board of trustees in December 2023, reflects a strategic shift aimed at streamlining GamCare’s focus toward treatment and support services for gambling harm. Although GamCare will no longer directly manage the Safer Gambling Standard, the standard's emphasis on risk management, responsible marketing, and protective tools will remain relevant as new organizational options are considered.

GamCare has announced that it will be discontinuing its Safer Gambling Standard by the end of 2024. This initiative, which was introduced in 2019, was designed to assess the responsible gambling practices of businesses and set a benchmark for safe operations within the industry. Although the Safer Gambling Standard will cease under GamCare's management, the organization remains committed to reducing gambling-related harm through other services, including its National Gambling Helpline, which continues to operate with increasing demand.
The shift is part of a broader restructuring that aims to enhance GamCare’s focus on providing direct support to individuals affected by gambling harm. The charity’s work will continue in these areas without interruption, and it plans to operate under a new framework, though details on this transition are still emerging.
