German referee embroiled in 2005 match-fixing scandal set to oversee Europa League game

An official who previously served a ban for his involvement in a gambling match-fixing scandal will officiate Thursday's Europa Conference League semi-final between Greek champion Olympiacos and English Premier League side Aston Villa.

The referee's suitability to oversee such a high-profile match has come under scrutiny following UEFA's appointment of the official. Due to the scandal that broke out in his home country of Germany in 2005, he was suspended from soccer for a period of six months.
