GTO vs Exploitive?

This is a debate that’s raged since the dawn of poker. GTO, or “game theory optimal,” playing is tight, disciplined poker. You play the odds, avoid mistakes, and make the technically correct play.
Exploitative play is looser, more aggressive. You adapt your strategy based on your opponents, looking for weaknesses to exploit. GTO will win you chips over the long run, but exploitatively can win you bigger pots.
As a grinder, I appreciate the math behind GTO. But as a player who loves action, I’m always looking to exploit an opponent’s mistakes for maximum damage.
The best players can blend both styles, using GTO as a base and opportunistically finding exploitative plays when they’re there. At the end of the day, chips are chips, so you gotta do whatever puts the most on your side of the table! I aim for balance, with maybe a slightly exploitative tilt. That’s my view on this debate.

While GTO methods offer a strong basis for decision-making, taking advantage of opponents' vulnerabilities can be very rewarding, especially when playing players that greatly stray from optimal play. In contrast to GTO players, who prioritize making decisions that will maximize expected value over the long term, exploitative techniques prioritize quick profits.
