Hawthorne race course denies running sick horse to boost betting numbers

The Hawthorne Race Course, which is located close to Chicago, has criticized a RICO lawsuit filed by a former board member, calling it "false and misguided" and accusing it of racing sick and injured horses.

The complaint alleges that in order to increase wagering revenues, track officials purposefully permitted unfit horses to race. The lawsuit claims that doing this will aid in raising funds for a proposed casino at the 133-year-old track.
