High Stakes Players: Hard Work or High IQ?

Some men are naturally born with a knack for knowing when two holes in the deck got the winning hand. But in my experience, skill at the table comes down to hours spent studying the odds, noticing patterns in the action, and learning when to bet and when to fold by getting your chips in bad.

Ain't no substitute for grit and determination in this game. You sit at the felt for ten, twelve hours a day, you see every tell and you know what's in every pot without peeking at the cards. The accounts might grow slow and steady over time, but that's how you make it in the high limit games. One bad beat and the idiots with more money than sense will be crying all the way to the cage. Talent only gets you so far, kid. In poker, hard work always beats a good mind.
