Hong Kong illegal gambling arrests lead to seizure of triad money

The police in Hong Kong are still focusing on organized crime and illegal gambling. The authorities are at it again, arresting more than 200 people involved in illegal gambling operations run by a triad group. Several recent searches have resulted in scores of arrests.

The city-wide raids resulted in the authorities seizing about US$255,800 in cash for use in clandestine gambling establishments. Similar operations last month brought in US$1.6 million plus a triad boss.

A large sum of cash was seized, but illegal gambling is still an ongoing problem. It may be difficult to completely stop without addressing the reasons people take part. More should be done to provide alternatives and support for those struggling with addictions.

The apprehension of prominent individuals and confiscation of their assets serve as a powerful message that both illicit gambling and organized crime will face zero tolerance, acting as a strong deterrent.
