How can I encourage players to follow the rules?

Lay down the law up front: how the game runs, no questions asked. Talk the reasons behind each rule so everybody gets it - standard approach means fair play for all. Those rules stay consistent, no bending for personal gain. I call 'em as I see 'em, impartial and objective, period.

Any rule-bending or abuse, there’ll be consequences. But handle those fairly too, addressing the why behind the actions, not just the actions themselves. The penalties fit the crime, aimed at understanding, not punishment.

Praise and rewards go to those showing they got the concept of rules in the first place. Set a standard through example every bit as much as enforcement. Respect and fairness in my interactions shape the experience all share in my games.

Questions on rules? I’m happy to chat through them. Differences in seeing the rule? Let’s discuss and clarify. Dialog leads to shared purpose far better than silencing dissent. Trust between players and management starts with approachability and impartiality.

Understand the spirit behind rules, not just the rules themselves, players flock together not as adversaries. They see we’re all in it for fun, fair play, memories together. Rules that unite instead of divide. No “winners” and “losers” - just loads of laughs, camaraderie and the satisfaction of friendly competition with no tears.
