How can I tell if a hand is unplayable?

There are two key factors to determine if a hand is unplayable: the cards themselves and the betting odds. Certain card combinations like two cards under 7 or above 10 with no helpful intermediates are difficult. However, the main indicator is the betting. If other players are raising at such high and frequent rates that you would grow deeper in the hole just by calling, it may be best to fold rather than risk losing more chips. While no one likes giving up a hand, cutting losses early can preserve your stack for more playable situations later.
