To keep poker in its proper place, one must maintain diligent self-discipline. The poker table should never supersede responsibilities to family, friends, health, career or finances.

While reveling in the sport of poker brings keen enjoyment, it must always remain a recreational pastime, not an obsession or addiction. Victory or defeat at the table should not disturb one's peace or contentment. Success is improving one's game gradually, not amassing wealth.

Poker teaches many valuable lessons when approached thoughtfully. But if allowed to dominate life's pursuits, it evolves from a pleasant diversion to a repression of all else that enriches existence. Balance and moderation are the keys to keeping poker in its rightful rank relative to the grander scheme of a well-lived, virtuous life. The chips may come and go, but integrity and balance endure.
