Illinois senator seeks to ban AI and deposit caps for sports betting

With two bills that would place additional restrictions on online sports betting, an Illinois senator is contributing to the state's rush of gaming legislation.

It states that sportsbooks are not allowed to use AI to monitor the betting habits of their users or to customize promotions or offers for particular users. Additionally, the bill would forbid the use of AI to generate markets like microbets, the results of which might or might not be connected to the final outcome of the athletic event.

Sportsbooks would be prohibited by the bill from taking more than five deposits from a single user in a 24-hour period.

Proposed legislation in Illinois to ban AI in sports betting and implement deposit caps seeks to address concerns about fair play and problem gambling. Banning AI, however, presents challenges in definition and enforcement, and could push its use underground. Deposit caps, while potentially helpful for responsible gambling, require careful calibration to avoid driving bettors to unregulated markets.
