Indian government slaps 30% tax on gambling winnings

The Indian government has introduced new guidelines to characterize online gambling and impose a 30% tax on net winnings from online casino games under the provisions of its Income Tax Act. The proposals were included in the Finance Bill 2023, which was published on February 1st after Nirmala Sitharaman, the finance minister, presented the budget. The Finance Bill now includes a proposal to describe gambling and impose a 30% income tax on net winnings from online games starting on April 1, 2024.
