Internal Revenue Service encourages sports bettors to gamble legally

In advance of the upcoming NFL season, a federal government agency is requesting that sports bettors abide by certain rules and regulations.

With the rise of illegal gambling operations, the Internal Revenue Service has written to taxpayers via its Criminal Investigation Unit, urging them to place bets on sports through authorized sportsbooks. The American Gaming Association reports that 68 million people bet on Super Bowl LVIII, a 35% increase from 2023, and the Internal Revenue Service is reminding taxpayers of the significance of abiding by gaming regulations ahead of a new NFL season.
