Iowa college athletes sanctioned for illegal gambling were allegedly subject to warrantless searches

The state's Division of Criminal Investigation special agent allegedly carried out warrantless searches to obtain evidence that resulted in the accusation of gambling violations against 41 college athletes from Iowa. In documents submitted to the District Court, that is the assertion made by a lawyer for two athletes.

The lead investigator was accused by the attorney of using artificial intelligence to set up a geofence around a University of Iowa residence hall in an effort to collect evidence regarding underage gambling. He asserted that no warrant, tips, complaints, or proof of underage gambling was obtained in order to carry out this action.
