Irish horse racing facing uncertainty as gambling advertisement ban imminent

Proposals to limit gambling advertising are raising concern in the Irish horse racing business, which fears the proposals might be disastrous. Two of the country's largest racing groups addressed their concerns to Ireland's Minister of State for the Department of Justice this week.

The Irish Gambling Regulation Bill is now being debated in parliament. The bill includes a provision forbidding gambling advertisements on Irish television between 5:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Supporters of the ban claim that it is a critical step toward improving public health across the country.

This proposed advertising ban could certainly impact the racing industry in Ireland. Horse racing brings entertainment and economic benefits, so lawmakers should consider alternatives that still protect public health but don't deal as harsh a blow. Perhaps strict limits rather than a total ban could achieve both goals.
