Is it better to hide your hand against a newbie?

I've played poker for years now and still wonder if it's better to hide my cards and win some quick money from less experienced players or be upfront and let them get some experience against me. On one hand, I need the money to keep playing but on the other hand I remember when I was a beginner and more experienced players went easy on me, allowing me to learn without losing too quickly. What do you think? Does showing your hand when facing a new player help them improve faster or is it better hide your cards and win the cash they put in the pot?
