Is there a way to tell if a slot machine has random reel modifiers?

I've heard stories that some slot machines have random reel modifiers that make certain wins happen more often. Does anybody know if there is actually a way for a slot player like me figure out if a machine has these modifiers? In my experience playing slots over the years, the machines have always seemed fair with no unusual patterns in the wins. Still, if there are ways for players to identify machines with reel modifiers, I would be interested to know.

While there is no foolproof way the machine has very high volatility, meaning that the payouts are unpredictable and can vary greatly, it may be using random reel modifiers. Second, if the machine has a very high jackpot, it may also be using random reel modifiers.
