Islamic police bust down betting shops in northern part of Nigeria

Islamic police in the northern Nigerian city of Kano have begun shutting down sports betting shops that they claim are operating illegally. The crackdown was prompted by concerns from community leaders and parents concerned about the rising number of gambling addicts, they explained. On the first day of the attack, 30 stores were closed in one suburb. And the shop owner was warned and sent home.

While gambling can have negative impacts, enforcing religious beliefs through property destruction is counterproductive. A more effective approach involves dialogue, education, legal regulation, addressing root causes of problem gambling, and respecting diverse beliefs within society.
