In a referendum that divided the 40,000 citizens of the tiny principality, Liechtensteinese voters decided against outlawing casinos. There are 6 casinos in the microstate. The damage to the affluent country's prestige and compulsive gambling, according to the opposition, were indeed serious problems. Even so, the proposed ban was opposed by 73% of voters.
The current Prince of Liechtenstein, Hans-Adam II, agreed with the government in stating that the nation's gambling industry is a major source of revenue and that a ban would be an extreme response to issues like gambling addiction.
