Lottery sales are surging in China as young people try to scratch their economic itch amidst deteriorating fiscal projections.

In the first half of the year, lottery revenues in China increased by more than 50% year over year to approximately 274 billion yuan. Analysts attribute this growth to a worsening economic downturn. Chen Ying, a Chinese livestreamer who broadcasts to her fans on the social media site Douyin, recently spent over one hundred thousand yuan (about $14,00) on lottery scratch cards.Following the release of prior data sets that showed youth unemployment at record highs for several months running, China said on Tuesday that it will stop publishing the statistics.
