Macau strengthens law against illicit money changers to combat unlawful gambling

The promise made by Macau lawmakers to make unlicensed money exchanges illegal has been fulfilled.
The penalties for unlawful gambling are also increased by the new law. The maximum penalty for side and parallel bets is eight years in prison. Furthermore, the law grants police additional authority to search suspected illegal gambling dens.

According to official data, Macau's gaming-related crime increased 62% in the first half of 2024 compared to the previous year.
