Malta opinion sees Italy delay regime change for online gambling

The "standstill period" for Italy's new online gambling concessions tender has been extended by the European Commission until November 18.

The ruling comes after the Malta government filed a "detailed opinion" expressing concerns about the technical and compliance requirements for companies operating under Italy's new online gambling licensing framework.

The Malta Gaming Authority contends that by imposing "duplicate requirements" on technical procedures and compliance controls, Italy will place "unnecessary barriers" on companies, including system and platform suppliers.

The European Commission has extended the standstill period on Italy's new online gambling concessions tender to November 18, following Malta's concerns. The Malta Gaming Authority argues that Italy's proposed regulations impose redundant technical and compliance requirements, potentially hindering businesses, including system and platform providers. Malta's objections highlight potential trade barriers that could arise from these duplicative compliance demands, impacting firms operating under Italy's new licensing framework.
