Mason Greenwood: What happens next to Man Utd striker after charges dropped?

The charges against Mason Greenwood - attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm - were dropped on Thursday

Mason Greenwood remains unavailable to play for Manchester United after the charges against him were dropped on Thursday afternoon.

Old Trafford chiefs will conduct an internal investigation into the 21-year-old's conduct and will not be making "any further comment" until their probe is complete. Greenwood has not represented United since the 1-0 victory over West Ham in the Premier League in late January 2022.

He was suspended by the club after the allegations were made against him and he was due to face trial in November 2023. These allegations included one charge of attempted rape and one charge of assault.

The next steps for Mason Greenwood are still unclear. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) dropped the charges against him on February 2, 2023, after key witnesses withdrew their involvement and new material came to light. Greenwood has always denied the allegations against him.

It is possible that Greenwood could return to playing football, but it is also possible that his career could be over. The CPS's decision to drop the charges does not mean that Greenwood is innocent, and it is up to Manchester United to decide whether they want him to be part of their team
