Match-fixing investigation into Brazilian football enters critical stage

In an effort to stop soccer match-fixing, Brazil's Public Ministry of Goiás has started Operation Maximum Penalty's third phase. As part of an investigation into seven matches, search and seizure warrants were carried out in eight cities spread across five states on Tuesday.

A match between Flamengo and Avaí in the 2022 Brazilian Championship served as one of the operation's main focal points. Avaí triumphed 2-1, but there were questions about how they achieved the victory all along.

This match fixing investigation in Brazil is reaching an important junction. With search warrants served in multiple cities across different states, it seems the authorities are taking this very seriously. It will be interesting to see what evidence they uncovered and if any players, coaches or officials could face criminal charges over the fixed Avaí vs Flamengo match. Cleaning up corruption in the sport is no easy task but this operation signals the commitment of public prosecutors to uphold integrity.
