Mexican government to conduct intense review on gambling licenses issued

This week, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador sent a strong message to the gaming industry. Casinos are no longer permitted in the Latin American country unless he grants permission. Obrador said in a public statement on Tuesday that Mexico does not need casinos. He believes that many licenses were obtained illegally, either through bribes or extortion, and intends to make some changes. Existing casino licenses will be reviewed. It will primarily focus on when the license was issued, and the outcome could be disastrous for a number of existing gambling establishments. Obrador's main opponent is Mexico's former president, Vicente Fox. Obrador, who took office in 2018, believes Fox's tenure resulted in too many shady deals.
