MGM Resorts dealing with ransomware attack

MGM Resorts International is still coping with the fallout of a large-scale cyberattack. While the casino operator has not commented, at least one industry insider believes the incident is the result of a ransomware attack.

In ransomware attacks, hackers essentially hold an entity's computer systems hostage, forcing victims to pay when they are asked to. As corporate America, especially the gambling industry, is more tasked with preserving customer data and becoming more reliant on technology, the profitability of ransomware assaults is increasing.

With the money MGM makes, you'd think they could hire the best people to prevent these hacks. Protecting customer information properly should be worth the costs involved. With bigger companies getting hit frequently, maybe it's time regulators require stronger security standards across the industry. Players need to know we're not just numbers to these sites and our privacy is protected.
