Michigan lottery winner gets 2024 off to a good start with $842million jackpot claim

The lottery said that a single Powerball ticket that was sold in Michigan matched every one of the six winning numbers from Monday's drawing, which had an estimated $842.4 million jackpot. Since the game's inception in 1992, this is the first time the jackpot has been won on New Year's Day.

The winning ticket owner must also choose between taking a $425.2 million lump sum payment or accepting an annuitized prize of $842.4 million. In the event that the winner chooses to accept the entire prize, they will get one upfront payment, followed by 29 yearly payments that rise by 5% annually.
